Highlights of the Declaration were presented in a powerful artistic performance at the third edition of the National Black Canadians Summit in Halifax, on July 31, 2022, on the eve of Emancipation Day, witnessed by Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director UNFPA and endorsed by Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Contributions for the Declaration were gathered over six years through in-person and virtual National Black Canadians Summits convened by the Michaëlle Jean Foundation and validated through a national survey conducted with support from the Network for the Advancement of Black Communities and the Black Opportunity Fund. The Declaration is named after the last National Black Canadians Summit hosted in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2022.

Canada has a historic opportunity to heal the wounds of history – and to achieve positive change that benefits not just the Black community, but every Canadian. Bold and courageous change --in policy, legislation, research and investment --requires leadership, vision and action.
